Bishop James B. Walker to preside over SoCal Region meeting

Newly-elected Bishop James B. Walker will hold his first Mid-Winter Council Meeting of the Southern California Region (SCR) of the Ninth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, which will convene on Friday, December 10 through Saturday, December 11, at The Four Points Sheraton Hotel-LAX, 9750 Airport Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.

The Rt. Rev. James B. Walker, the 56th elected bishop, was elected on the first ballot in July 2010 at the 37th C.M.E. General Conference in Mobile, Alabama.

The Mid-Winter Council will be hosted by Amos Memorial C.M.E. Church in Los Angeles. Rev. William Smart and Rev. Thembekila Smart are the co-pastors.
Other hosts are Rev. Napoleon Goshay, Presiding Elder – Los Angeles/San Diego District and Host Presiding Elder; Rev. Wendell M. Oldham, Jr., Presiding Elder – Los Angeles District; Rev. Julio Andujo, SCR Regional Administrator; and Mrs. Deloris Walker, First Lady of the Ninth Episcopal District.

The Quadrennial theme is, “An Essential Church: Poised for 21st Century Ministry,” and The Ninth Episcopal District Winter Council theme is, “Making Strong Churches, Breaking Strongholds,” taken from Matthews 16:17-19.

The conference convenes on Friday with registration at 8 a.m.  The first session begins at 9 a.m. with a Missionary Meeting and Workshop.   Wanda Thomas is Missionary President – Southern California Region, Renee Woodruff is Missionary Vice President, and First Lady Walker is Missionary Liaison.

At 11 a.m., Bishop Walker will meet with the presiding elders, the Joint Board of Finance, and his cabinet.  The General Session will convene at 2 p.m. with the presentation of the Bishop and the Bishop’s Address. At 3:45 p.m., the Session for Conference Materials and registration for the Pastor’s Conference will be held.

The Evening Service of Worship starts at 7 p.m. and the preacher will be Rev. Harlan Jones, senior pastor of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church in Los Angeles.  The Phillips Temple Mass Choir will render songs of praise and the Usher Board will serve.

On Saturday, registration begins at 8 a.m. and the Morning Service of Worship starts at 9 a.m.  Rev. Erick L. Carpenter, pastor of Brown Temple C.M.E. Church in Santa Ana,  will preach.

Bishop Walker will conduct the General Session/Roll Call at 9:30 a.m. and at 10:45 a.m., Departmental Reports, Presiding Elders Reports, Joint Board of Finance Report and the Treasurer’s Report will be given.

The Closing Service of Worship will be at 12 noon with the sermon delivered by Rev. Christiana Felix of the Northern California Region. The meeting will conclude with the Closing/Dismissal and Benediction by Bishop Walker.

Also, a welcome reception for Bishop and Mrs. Walker will be held at 2 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Lewis Metropolitan C.M.E. Church, 4900 S. Western Avenue in Los Angeles.  Brother James Scott is the welcome reception chairperson.
