A trial date of April 17 has been set for R&B singer Chris Brown and his bodyguard on misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an October incident.

Brown, 24, and Christopher Hollosy, 35, were each charged with one count of simple assault in connection with an altercation outside the W hotel in Northwest D.C. following a Howard University homecoming event.

Both men pleaded not guilty at a January hearing, and refused a plea deal. Another hearing to set their trial date was postponed to Feb. 20 to allow for the acquisition of video surveillance of the incident; neither man was present at the second hearing.

Brown’s appearance was waived because he is currently undergoing rehab in California in connection with a 2009 assault against pop-star Rihanna, his then-girlfriend.

If convicted, Brown and Hollosy face up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, said Bill Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Columbia.

The victim of the alleged assault is also suing the pair in civil court for $1.5 million each, according to the Associated Press.

Senior Judge Geoffrey M. Alprin said the trial date could change to accommodate the attorneys’ schedules. According to The Washington Post, the attorneys estimated the proceedings could take up to three days.
