Helping To Enlighten & Educate

“A Way—Not a Place” is what Reverend Lelia M. Harris calls the Centre of Renewal (COR), a center she founded based in Leimert Park. Harris is about helping people find and embrace their inner source in order to obtain spiritual well-being and balance in life.

“[COR] of renewal is an idea I came up with while I was at the University of Santa Monica,” said Harris. “The idea is reaching out to individuals… to become empowered and to trust that they have all the resources and potential within themselves—and to access that.

“It is spiritually-based; it integrates spirituality with practical application.”

Originally from Los Angeles, CA, Harris holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio State University and master’s in spiritual psychology from the University of Santa Monica. She received ministerial training through the Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary based in Chicago and Miami. She received her license to minister in December 2012.

She worked with other religious institutions such as Understanding Principles for Better Living Church with Rev. Dr. Della Reese Lett and was a founding member of Agape International Spiritual Center and Guidance Church, where she received training under Reverend Dr. Daniel L. Morgan. Her call to ministry actually began in the 70s while taking religious science classes. Harris became a religious science practitioner and spiritual therapist.

“A spiritual therapist is a person who does counseling, we’re not doing the psychological models,” said Harris. “[We] do counseling for problems a [person] may be going through; working with them in prayer, prayer is the tool that we use and getting the person to see a different way.”

COR, which recently celebrated its inauguration in July, focuses on making individuals aware of their four centers of being: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Harris believes by deep introspection and spiritual tools, one can gain a better appreciation of self, others and life.

There is a course curriculum at COR that focuses on various areas concerning personal growth and wel—being. These classes are primarily crafted to help individuals:

*Become a greater beneficial presence and example to follow

*Develop greater levels of true intimacy and trust with self in newer, richer ways

*Learn practical tools & principles that assist you to live a life dedicated to your own spiritual progression

*Relate powerfully and effectively with yourself

*Learn a more profound way to take care of yourself

“Ok, yes, you’re going to fall apart as human nature does,” said Harris, “but also recognize that there is always a larger picture and how I get [beyond] the life stuff that’s going on.

“We always say, ‘God has provided everything I will ever need,’ and that is true but it’s in terms of our thoughts, our beliefs and how we work with those things.”

Classes will begin at COR September 15. There is a registration fee of $35.00 and the price of selected readings for classes.

The Centre of Renewal is currently leading classes out of Gary Jones’ Puppet Theater in Leimert Park. For more information, you may call (310) 281-7707 or (213) 840-2691. You can also contact Rev. Harris at for by Fax at (323) 936-9246.
