Myrtle Sterling Priestley, named for her aunt, was born on October 23, 1932 in New Orleans, LA to the late Joseph and Gladys Sterling.
Known affectionately as “Myrt” or “Red,” she was raised in the Catholic Faith. She spent the remainder of her life as a faithful servant of the Lord.
On March 7, 1952, Myrtle was married to Malcolm Peter Priestley. She readily took on the role of wife and partner. From their union, they created a blended family with 5 children: Patricia, Peter, Glenda, Gwendolyn, and Greg.
Myrtle received her formative education from Xavier Preparatory High School, graduating in 1949. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from California State University, Los Angeles in 1958, where she also became a member of Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc.
Always working to facilitate learning and education in the youth, Myrtle dedicated her life to teaching. She spent most of her years as a Kindergarten teacher in Los Angeles. She received multiple accolades and awards including Teacher of the Year for the 1983-1984 school year. She also worked to teach new generations of teachers how to be excellent educators. She retired from teaching in 1991 after 33 years of continuous service.
On November 2, 2016, while resting in her bed, Myrtlrte was called home to be with the Lord. She is preceded in death by her husband Malcolm Peter. She is survived by her two children, Patricia Lynne and Peter Malcolm; her 3 bonus children, Glenda Marie, Gwendolyn Margaret, and Greg Malcolm, Her grandchildren, Dana, Genelle (Julian), Gezelle, Dymone, Kristen, Nia, Jade, and Ghiya; Her great-grandchildren – Ghade, Ghade, Ghordan, Marielle, Marcus, Jaelon, Grace, and Genevieve; and a plethora of friends, neighbors, students, and colleagues. Services will be held at Spalding Mortuary, 3045 S. La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90016.
