Catch the SunRise at Agape

[Culver City, CA]…. In this season of renewal and resurrection, Michael Bernard Beckwith, D.D. founder and spiritual director of the Agape International Spiritual Center, continues to provide inspiration and spiritual leadership by anchoring the compelling vision of a world that works for every one. Throughout the month of March his tell-it-like-it-is theme was “A Good Crisis is a Terrible Thing to Waste,” and he passionately impressed upon his congregants the fact that any ‘crisis’ includes not only danger but also opportunity. That seemed to be a hard act to follow, but he proved equal to the task with the theme for the month of April, “Spring Forward: You are the Way.“

One tried and true technique for finding the Way includes enrolling in one of the many courses offered at The University of Transformational Studies and Leadership at Agape (UTSLA) where Dr. Beckwith is currently teaching “Universal Principles, Themes and Laws Governing Spiritual Living” on Monday mornings and evenings. In addition to the special curriculum for Spiritual Practitioners and Ministers, other exciting classes for the Spring 2009 term include the exploration and experience of Meditation, Prayer, Writing, Visioning, Yoga, Self-Awareness, Spanish, Painting and Drumming.

A special celebration of the sacred called “Prayers in the Wind” was unfurled at Agape last November as part of the 22nd Anniversary of the burgeoning spiritual community. It included a revelry of healing music and interactive prayer facilitated by Dr. Beckwith, ordained Agape Ministers, licensed Spiritual Practitioners, Movement of Agape Dancers and the 150-voice Agape International Choir and House Band under the direction of Dr. Rickie Byars Beckwith. The program proved to be so transformational and inspiring that the newest iteration of “Prayers in the Wind” is being offered in celebration of Good Friday, April 10th at 7:30 pm. Dr Beckwith invites the public to “Come and let your illusions be crucified. Come and lay your burdens down.”  The world renowned Agape Choir, which recently performed at the Shrine Auditorium for the “NAACP 2009 Image Awards” and the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” will anchor the healing of body, mind and spirit that “Prayers in the Wind” will offer via a vortex of sacred chanting, meditation and prayer.

Agape has celebrated the Resurrection of the Living Spirit for the last two years at the Gibson (formerly Universal) Amphitheater at Universal City but invites congregants, family and friends to “Come Home” for Easter this year. And to come bright and early! An exquisite Easter Sunrise Service, with a special gift for all attendees, begins at 5:30 am with Meditation, and Music and Message at 6:00 am. For those wishing to ease more slowly into the celebration of the Risen Lord, the second service follows at 8:30 am with Meditation at 8:00 am, and the final worship at 11:30 am with Meditation at 11:00 am.

Easter week is rounded out with the resplendent and always eagerly anticipated Spring Meditation Retreat, Thursday April 16th through Saturday April 18th with Rev. Beckwith and Dr. Byars Beckwith facilitating.  In this silent retreat that includes prayer, visioning, chanting, sacred song and yoga, individuals consciously commit and surrender their lives to their highest possibility at the serenely beautiful Mary and Joseph Retreat Center in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The Beckwiths round out the month traveling to Chicago to facilitate “Liberate Your Spirit” for the Chicago Center for Spiritual Living at the Wyndam Hotel near O’Hare International Airport Friday, April 24th. Saturday April 25th, they present “The Life Visioning Process” at National Louis University, Skokie Campus with music, guided meditations, creative visualizations, affirmative prayer and insights from diverse spiritual traditions.

Exciting preparations are nearing completion for the launching of Revelation 2009. “The Power of Creativity- From Coping to Cooperation to Communion,” Agape’s 16th annual transformational conference of empowerment, creativity and connection, takes place at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia from May 28th to 31st.  Rev. Beckwith is the featured facilitator, Dr. Rickie Byars Beckwith directs the Music and Arts program, and Agape Youth and Family Directors, Rev. Leon Campbell and wife Arlene Campbell facilitate the Youth and Family dimension of the conference in which Agape youth will co-create a service project to benefit the greater Atlanta community. Other powerful presenters include Dannion Brinkley, international speaker and best-selling author of ‘Saved by the Light,’ Reverend Dr. Barbara King, author, international speaker and founder/minister of the Hillside Chapel and Truth Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and Dr. William Coleman, a renowned minister and biblical scholar.

Information about these and other April Agape Activities is available at or (310) 348-1250. Agape continues to offer three services on Sundays mornings at 7, 9, 11:30am, an intimate evening Revealing Service at 6:30 pm, and a Wednesday evening program at 7:15 pm, with meditation a half hour prior to each service. Handicap parking is available for all services with Sign Language interpretation during Wednesday night and 11:30 am Sunday services.

Agape International Spiritual Center is located at 5700 Buckingham Parkway, Culver City CA 90230.
