Be sure to go and get some frustrations out for free at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.

They’re kicking, punching and sweating every Thursday at 7:00pm at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza (BHCP). The air is charged with grunts, yells and high-flying kicks on the Bridge as the community gets into shape… for free.

By day, Mark Smiley is a real estate consultant for Cynergy Realty Group, showing residents to prospective buyers. Originally from Los Angeles, Ca, he’s working in a field that he has come to love.

“I’ve always had a passion for being an entrepreneur,” said Smiley. “I also had a passion for the real estate business.

“So, I just combined those two passions.”

By night, Smiley turns into a lean, mean, kickboxing machine as he embraces his other passion… putting his class through the ringer—a fun ringer. You can find him leading the class and working out among the class as he motivates and keeps his students busy.

Smiley became interested in kickboxing when he began taking classes in a popular gym. He quickly found himself taking a variety of kickboxing–based classes.

“I’m always the type of person that likes to challenge myself to do something above and beyond,” said Smiley.

He soon wanted to teach the very classes he had been taking to others. He pursued getting the credentials and certifications necessary and became an instructor. He’s been leading cardio kick classes since 1999.

Smiley trains with a friend who is a martial artist, which undoubtedly gives him an edge and drive. This is the same energy he brings to his charged classes every night. Smiley wants to help the community get into shape by kicking off the pounds.

He has led cardio kick classes at a variety of popular gyms and other venues. Smiley was ultimately approached by BHCP to bring cardio kick to the mall.

“They wanted to start bringing fitness to their community,” said Smiley. “I’m always game for bringing fitness to our community because everybody is not able to afford a gym membership.

“They’re offering free classes—it’s a perfect fit.”
