A historic event will occur at Bryant Temple A.M.E. Church with the installation of officers of the first church-based American Legion Post known in California.

The momentous occasion will be held on Sunday, April 15, during the 11:15 a.m. service at Bryant Temple, 2525 West Vernon Avenue in Los Angeles, said the Rev. Dr. Clyde W. Oden, Jr., senior pastor.

“We are honored and excited to host the Bryant Temple American Legion Post #109 and we invite the public to come witness the installation,” said Dr. Oden.

“When we launched our new Veterans’ Ministry, the goal was to make Bryant Temple the most veteran’s friendly church in Los Angeles. We want to embrace with open arms all of the military heroes and their families who are living in our community. And there is no better veteran’s friendly organization than the American Legion.”

The officers being installed are Commander Arthur Gulley, 1st Vice Commander Frederick Poindexter, III and Robert E. Whitfield as treasurer. The preacher for the service is the Rev. Ralph C. Cooper, an associate minister at Bryant Temple and American Legion member.

“The new Post #109 was established in record time, thanks to the guidance of Robert Miller, a Bryant Temple member who serves as Commander of District 24 of the American Legion. Now, the post is setting new highs enrolling new members,” noted Dr. Oden.
