Brotherhood Crusade presents: A Scholastic Experience
By Sentinel News Service

The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade is offering a unique anti-obesity and violence prevention soccer program to children and youth ages 6 – 17 years of age for free. The program will commence at the EXPO center, 3980 Bill Robertson Lane (formerly Menlo Avenue), Los Angeles, California 90037 and spread to other local parks. Registration has already begun for the first session, which will start the second week of April. Youth may elect to participate in the Spring session or place their names on the waiting list for the summer session. All youth are welcome to participate in all three sessions (Spring, Summer and Fall). Uniforms and shin guards are provided and every youth will receive their own ball at the end of the season (1 ball per youth).

The Scholastic Sports Experience Soccer Initiative is a community-wide anti-obesity, delinquency prevention, health & nutrition education, academic improvement, and family strengthening strategy that uses soccer as a means for positive social change. The program provides 1,000 six to seventeen year old low-income, underserved and disenfranchised children and youth with safe places to play, places to grow and places to learn.

Children and youth engage in physical activity, nutrition, mentoring, and family engagement activities a minimum of three days per week, 90 minutes per day for 36 weeks each year. The goal is to ensure that children facing social and economic barriers have easy and affordable access to quality soccer programs that support their physical and personal development.

An average of 200 minutes per week (60 – 70 minutes per day, three days per week) of moderate to vigorous physical activity (as recommended by the US Department of Health and Human Services) is effectuated through soccer instruction and “no-cut” soccer leagues in which every child participates for the entire length of play.

Health and nutrition education programming is integrated into the soccer format. The curriculum is taught as part of the 15-minute healthy snack break during practice and 15-minute half time during scrimmage and league games. It is also taught as part of the family strengthening curriculum during the mandatory biweekly meetings for soccer program participants and their families.

Individuals representing private companies, organizations, faith-based institutions and other sources serve as volunteer coaches and mentors. Prior to assignment, volunteers must be background screened, fingerprinted and approved. Lead coaches must also matriculate through our evidence-based mentor training program (Mentoring Resources Center and National Mentoring Center curricula). Mentoring is a critical program component because it impacts seven delinquency risk factors: poor parental supervision; delinquent beliefs; delinquent peers; commitment to street-oriented peers; antisocial behavior; school challenges; and low civic attachment.

Individuals are invited to share this opportunity with everyone they know. Interested parties may enroll youth in the program by calling the number listed on the attached flyer.

This program is offered through a collaborative partnership between The US Soccer Foundation, The California Endowment, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, The City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, EXPO Center, Weingart YMCA, and Brotherhood Crusade.
