Bradford to Lead Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee

Top priorities include energy efficiency and rate payer protection

Assemblymember Steven C. Bradford (D-Gardena) today announced that he has been selected to lead the Assembly Committee on Utilities and Commerce. The appointment, made by Assembly Speaker John Pe‘rez (D-Los Angeles), takes effect immediately.

“I am honored and humbled that Speaker Pe‘rez chose me to lead this committee,” said Bradford. “As chair, I intend to focus on creative ways to meet our daunting energy efficiency goals and protecting rate payers.”

Assemblymember Bradford continued, saying, “There is a great deal of work for this committee to do, such as updating and expanding the electrical transmission and distribution system. I have full faith that through the Speaker’s vision and the leadership provided by the Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee, we can successfully address these and other issues facing California.”

A longtime advocate for energy conservation, Assemblymember Bradford also has practical experience in the industry. “I believe my background will help the committee address California’s energy issues,” Bradford stated.

The committee’s primary jurisdictions are public utilities; the California Public Utilities Commission; the California Energy Commission; alternative energy development and conservation; natural gas; wireless, wireline and cable communications; international trade; Women and Minority Business Enterprises; and tourism.

Assemblymember Bradford represents the 51st District, comprised of the communities of Hawthorne, Lawndale, Inglewood, Lennox, South Central LA, Westchester, Gardena, Willowbrook, Playa Vista, and parts of Ladera Heights and West Compton.
