
That Shani Davis is the first Black-American to win an Olympic gold medal in speed skating. The barriers he smashed cleared the path for African American speed skaters Maame Biney and Erin Jackson to be here. He inspired the creation of the DC-ICE (Inner City Excellence) program in the Washington area. Shani Davis collected his second gold medal in the in 1,000. In 2009 he set the standard for the Olympics in Vancouver. He won both his second silver in the 1,500 meters in his second gold in the 1,000 in at that Olympics and earned his third consecutive Overall World Cup Titles in the 1,500m and the 1000m during the 2009 and 2010 season. He has become the first skater to defend his championship. His career has included seven world titles and he also made an Olympic team as a short –track speed skater.
