Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Sr.

Bishop T. Larry Kirkland Sr., presiding prelate of the 5th Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church, delivered the invocation at the historic installation of California Attorney General Kamala Harris on January 3.
The following is the text of his prayer for Attorney General Harris.

“Oh Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth. We praise You for the great state of California with its abundant natural and human resources. You are worthy to be praised.

Eternal and omnipotent God, whose rule is righteous and just, we thank You for this special occasion to celebrate the accomplishments of Kamala Harris, a woman whom the people have chosen to administer the affairs of the justice system.

We honor this goodly woman as she assumes the role of Attorney General of the great state of California … a woman who has made history by becoming the first African American and female to assume this high and lofty position.

When we look back over our lives, we can join in song, lifting the words of the great songwriter, James Weldon Johnson, “Stony the road we trod; bitter the chastening rod, felt in the day when hope unborn had died. Yet with a steady beat have not our weary feet, come to the place for which our fathers sighed.”

Please undergird her with moral fortitude and fill us with hope for the opportunity for fairness and equity.  Help her, O God, to be a voice for the voiceless; hope for the hopeless and help for the helpless. We pray that her election will improve the quality of the lives of all Californians.

Pour your blessing on her as she assumes this awesome responsibility. Walk beneath her to uphold her; in front of her to guide her; behind her to strengthen her; and beside her to protect her.

Pour your blessings upon all of us and keep us in your care. Help her to be not weary in well doing, for in due season, we shall reap if we faint not.  We pray that through her administration, justice will roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream. Amen.
