The negative affects of diabetes has hit African Americans harder than any other race in the U.S.  Many black people do not have as much access to heathy food choices and state of the art gyms like people of other races, and many simply do not take advantage of what is available, which is one reason why so many people have been lost to diabetes.

The Black Sports Agents Association (BSAA), Black Sports Academy, and City Youth Exposure are doing their part to bring awareness to the community about this health issue through The Chairman’s Challenge 5K Walk/Run, which will be held on Sunday, August 4, 9:00 a.m., at the Howard Hughes Center.

“I’ve brought together executives, sports professionals, athletes and celebrities, to help create awareness on why our community needs to be more conscious of eating healthy, working out, and getting rest,” said Andre Farr, CEO of the BSAA.  “And making sure that we are active for at least an hour a day.”

Farr has personally seen the affects of diabetes, and he has also seen the cycle of poor food choices being repeated.

“I went to three funerals in December of last year, and they all died of complications from diabetes,” Farr said.  “Unfortunately at the repast after the funeral, the food that was served was exactly the same type of food that contributed to the death of the three people.”

This family friendly event is open to the public, will have a game of beach volleyball and kickball directly after the walk/run, and Farr is known to bring celebrities to his events.  Jamie Foxx, Terrell Owens,

Michael Strahan, Larry Fitzgerald, Jerome Bettis, Stuart Scott, Kevin Frazier, Matt Barnes, Claudia Jordan and Nicole Murphy, just to name a few, have been spotted at BCAA events.
