Washington, DC–Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, joined President Barack Obama and a number of her colleagues to honor the life and legacy of the late Dr. Dorothy Irene Height with the signing of a bill naming the post office located at 2 Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, DC in her honor.

“With the passing of Dr. Height, our nation lost of a true national treasure. Dr. Height’s leadership in the struggle for equality and human rights serves as an inspiration to all Americans. Her undying commitment to a just society and her vision for a better world undergirds the work of the Congressional Black Caucus, and the CBC is forever grateful for her mentorship, wisdom, and guidance.

“I want to thank Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton for all of her hard work in crafting and for making this bill a priority for this Congress. This post office will stand as a tribute to Dr. Height–a visionary and great humanitarian who gave us all so much.”

The post office at 2 Massachusetts Avenue is just next to Union Station in northeast Washington. It has been in service since 1914. An official District of Columbia landmark, the building was first called the Washington D.C. Post Office until 1986 when it became National Capital station.
