Assemblyman Mike Davis (D-Los Angeles) paid tribute to South Los Angeles students who have achieved a 3.6 grade point average and above at the annual Academic Achievement Awards Reception. The Wallis Annenberg Building, Muses Room, was the site for the event that hosted over one hundred scholars and their families. The students hailed from 48th District public, private and charter schools, including: Animo Charter School, Foshay Learning Center, Manual Arts High School, Opportunities Unlimited Charter School, Price High School and Washington Preparatory.

“We are proud of the achievements of students from South Los Angeles,” said Assemblyman Mike Davis. “Many of the students from our high schools have attained high academic success and are no doubt the next leaders of our country. We are pleased to focus recognition on the noteworthy accomplishments they have obtained,” remarked Assemblyman Davis.

Each graduating senior received a Certificate of Recognition from the State of California Assembly for their scholastic achievements throughout their high school careers. Far too many national indicators point to the underperformance of African American and Latino children in the classroom.

Assemblyman Davis realizes the importance of highlighting seniors who have achieved academic excellence in spite of negative circumstances. He believes that by focusing on the best students more students will find inspiration through their accomplishments.

The inspirational program featured messages from Assemblyman Davis, Connie Watson, Executive Director of People Who Care Learning Center and Attorney Charles McClurkin. The musical inspiration “Beautiful” was provided by 2011 Talent Showcase participant Leeyah Porter. Chef Marilyn served the guests a full course meal with all the fixin’s.
