Joe Ann McMillon

November 1, 1940 – January 24, 2011

Joe Ann McMillion was born November 1, 1940 to Hazel and Andrew Gaskin in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her mother Hazel and her stepfather Joe Gioustover raised Joe Ann in New Orleans with her four siblings. She was a graduate of Nelson Elementary School, Joseph S. Clark High School, Sydney Beauty College and Southern University.

Joe Ann was married to her best friend, Wiley B. McMillon, and from this union two children were born, Valerie McMillon LeSure and Todd McMillon whom Joe Ann considered the loves of her life.

After graduating from Southern University, she ventured out West to become an elementary school teacher in California. A devoted and beloved educator, Joe Ann was bestowed “Teacher of the Year” and various other accolades for her work within the Los Angeles Unified School District. With a career spanning over 30 years, her presence was known at Grape Elementary in Los Angeles, Colon P. Kelley Elementary in Compton, Eshelman Elementary in San Pedro and finally at Ambler Avenue Elementary in Carson where for 22 years she was and will always be known as “Mama Mac” to a generation of students, parents, co-workers and friends she made along the way.

Joe Ann came to the Lord at an early age, worshipping with her family at Asia Baptist Church in New Orleans. Continuing her walk with Christ, Joe Ann along with her husband Wiley, have been committed and proud members of Zoe Christian Fellowship for over 20 years under the teachings of Pastor Ed Smith. Joe Ann was an active member in numerous areas of ministry and considered it a blessing to have a church family as special as Zoe Christian Fellowship.

On the evening of January 24, 2011 Joe Ann went home to be with her Maker. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, an exceptional mother, a beloved sister, an amazing Nana, a cherished family member and a friend beyond measure.

She was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Hazel and Joe Gioustover, her father Andrew Gaskin, her brother Marvin, her son Josh Foster and her brother-in-laws Raymond Mansion and Merlin McMillon.

She is survived by her loving husband Wiley, her daughter Valerie “Lynn” LeSure & son-in-law Sean, son Todd, and daughter-in-law Erin, her pride and joy grandchildren Khalin, Kortnei, Sean II, Skye, Ryder and Saylor, sister, Gioustover, brother-in-laws Robert McMillon, Kenneth McMillon and Walter Alexandria and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and loving friends.

Joe Ann’s ability to make strangers feel an important to her as one of her best friends was only one of her many special gifts. She was an over-achieving nurturer and a cheerleader for anyone in need. Joe Ann always put others first.

To be part or witness Joe Ann McMillion’s life was an insightful look on how God intended Christians to treat one another. She is irreplaceable, unforgettable and will be dearly missed.
