Annual Community Day Again Offers Support to Residents of LA
By Sentinel News Service

Bishop Edward Turner and his wife, Carolyn Turner, have been helping members of their community for over twenty years.

For twenty-three years, Bishop Edward Turner has opened his church and his heart each January to community members in honor of Martin Luther King Day. He discovered soon after founding his church, Power of Love Fellowship, that there were too many people needing food and clothing and he wanted to help.

Community Day will be held on Saturday, January 18th, 2014 and thousands of people are expected to take part in this day of empowerment.  The day kicks off with the Annual Prayer Breakfast which, this year, will be honoring those community members who have helped over the years.

Community Day was established in 1996 by Bishop Edward R. Turner to support and promote Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy by providing help, hope and succor for the less fortunate. During each Community Day, families are allowed to take as much food and new clothing as they can carry away. Dozens of resources offer information and assistance to the attendees. Activities include a Job Fair, Health Forum, Literacy Awareness, Home Buyers and Banking Expo as well as Camp Can-Do and Youth Empowerment for the kids.

This idea first simmered when he and his wife Carolyn took seven homeless men to breakfast one Sunday morning. “We told them we’d feed them again the next Sunday,” he said. “Seventy showed up, and the next Sunday it was more. Pretty soon, the Burger King bill grew to $1,300 and my advisors at the church said we’d have to do something.”   That something has become Community Day.

Admission to Community Day is free which takes place at 1430 West Manchester Avenue – Los Angeles, CA  90047, donations of $25 for the Prayer Breakfast are accepted. For information about both events, contact Community Day Headquarters at 323.753.4673 or
