AME Church Celebrates Founder’s Day

The Southern California Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church will celebrate Founder’s Day in honor of Bishop Richard Allen, on Sunday, February 9, at 4 p.m., at First A.M.E. Church, 2270 South Harvard Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The service commemorates Bishop Allen’s birthday, February 14, 1760, as well as the founding of the A.M.E. denomination of April 9, 1816.

“We invite the community to celebrate the legacy of America’s oldest denomination founded by Blacks.  Throughout its history, the A.M.E. Church has stood at the forefront of the struggle for social justice in the Christian context,” said Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Sr., presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church

“Continuing that legacy, A.M.E. churches in Southern California currently work in the areas of homelessness eradication, the mass incarceration epidemic, combatting gun violence, economic empowerment, affordable health care and other areas of common good.”

The Founders’ Day service, hosted by First A.M.E. Pastor J. Edgar Boyd, will feature sermonettes by the Rev. Francine Brookins, the Rev. Dr. Kelvin T. Calloway, the Rev. Dr. James A. Rumph and the Rev. Dr. Allen L. Williams.  The Southern California Conference Choir, aided by choirs and singers from Bethel A.M.E.-Fontana, Bethel A.M.E.-Los Angeles, First A.M.E.-Pasadena, and Grant A.M.E-Los Angeles, will provide the music.
