Afternoon Expressions

It was a day of empowerment, motivation, and creativity, at the Ebell Club. “Traditionally, we have kicked off the Torch Awards with our program focused on fun and fashion. However, this year we wanted to provide a program with more substance, so our guests would walk away with a new spirit of controlling their destinies and a sense of who they truly can become.

As a result, we selected these four dynamic women to express themselves by telling stories of their journey,” says Jacqueline Castillo, president and founder.

The mistress of ceremonies for the afternoon was Beverly White, the distinguished veteran general assignment reporter for Channel 4 News, who interviewed the legendary guest panelists: Phoebe Beasley, a nationally- renowned artist, lecturer and entrepreneur, who just completed her 40-year art retrospective exhibit; Tanya Hart, a veteran host and commentator with a wide range of broadcasting experience.

Currently, she is the host of “Hollywood Live with Tanya Hart,” a syndicated program on American Urban Radio Networks’ 500 Stations; and Shirley Kinsey, an entrepreneur and philanthropist with a passion for African American history and art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  As they told their stories, many layers of their personality and professional life were unveiled and received with admiration and esteemed respect by the audience.

Another form of “expression” was presented by Mamie Hansberry, who displayed her original works of art which depicts slavery in the deep south in American history.

The keynote speaker for the afternoon was Linda Clemons, who is a top sales trainer, and is one of the most widely-respected motivational speakers and body language experts in the country today. Linda is also the CEO of Sisterpreneur, Inc., an international business empowerment organization, and a popular radio and television personality.

She began her presentation with a rousing expression of quotes from Nikki Giovanni, Dr. Maya Angelou, and her grandmother.  As she meandered her way through the aisles of tables, the audience was mesmerized as she gave a crash course in non-verbal communication and identified specific characteristics of some of the attendees.

She explained how you can learn to quickly read the signs and signals people are sending you with their bodies, in order to achieve better results in the workplace or in their relationships. “The lessons I learned today will stay with me for a lifetime,” says Charlene Day.  As the program came to a conclusion, door prizes including Southwest Airline tickets, a day of basketball at the Clippers and Lakers game, and an autographed basketball from Earvin “Magic” Johnson, were presented to the lucky recipients.

The program ended with tears, cheers, and a standing ovation, as the Legacy Ladies kicked off the 2011 Torch Awards.
