Taylor Mayfield wants to help the community this tax season.

There are a number of places on Crenshaw opening their doors for tax season but according to Taylor Mayfield, owner of Tax Ease Plus, none of them may have as much passion for the community’s financial well-being as he does.

“I look at my competitors: H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, Liberty… they tend to charge people too much,” said Mayfield, who offers his customers depending on their needs, services for about 20 to 40 percent less.

“But, what I have is a passion for the community. I’m a community activist.”

He’s also an accountant, who worked in corporate America for twenty years, 19 in East L.A. and one in Culver City. Both were businesses affected by the recession.  Both were from where he was laid off.

“I came to Crenshaw in August of 2011 and put it all together,” Mayfield explained.

“By the end of the year I was open for business.”

This year, tax season is starting a little late because of the recent government shut down. According to IRS officials, they will not begin processing individual tax returns earlier than January 28. The season ending date of April 15 will remain the same however, but Mayfield’s doors will still be open.

“I’m open all year round because I feel my community should have access to me,” Mayfield explained.

There are other things that people need, he said, like students who may need FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) help, or notarization. Best of all though he said, he is on a mission to heal this community financially.

He has hooked up with a Black-owned financial services company and together they are helping families learn how money works and how they can plan their futures better.

“A lot of people in the Black community don’t have wealth, we don’t do things like plan for retirement,” said Mayfield.

Tax Ease Plus is located at 4371 Crenshaw Blvd. Unit B2. They are open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. For more information, visit them on Facebook or call (323) 293-7093.
