Art Contest Encourages Kids & Teens to Express How to Best Prepare for an Emergency
LOS ANGELES – Could kids and teens survive an emergency if their life suddenly became unplugged from laptops, cell phones or video games? This week, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health launched the “Just Be Ready. Prepare Together” art contest as a way for youth to demonstrate how they would prepare and be ready for an emergency. Being prepared for an emergency can include: building an emergency kit, creating a family communication plan, learning life saving actions and/or helping educate others.Â
“Kids and teens can be great advocates for getting their families prepared for emergencies – whether it’s a potential earthquake, wildfire or pandemic flu outbreak,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health and Health Officer. “By providing an opportunity for educational creative expression through art, our hope is that the contest not only encourages dialogue about being prepared, but will also push families into action to develop a communication plan and assemble a supply kit.”
Artwork must include the “Just Be Ready. Prepare Together” theme somewhere within the design. The grand prize winner will receive a MacBook laptop, with more than  other prizes to be given away. The contest is designed for participants 17 years old (as of September 1, 2009) or younger. No entry fee or purchase is required to participate. Artwork and official entry form must be received or postmarked no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009. Winners will be selected on or about the week of September 7, 2009. The contest is an extension of the “Just Be Ready: Prepare Together” emergency preparedness education outreach program, which encourages residents to create a family communication plan, and to build an emergency preparedness kit with ten essential items: Water, Food, Cash & Important Documents, Clothes, Flashlight, First Aid Kit, Medicine, Radio, Toiletries and Tools. This award-winning campaign was specifically developed for the multicultural and multi- language communities of LA County. Materials are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Khmer, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Armenian, Russian, Arabic and Farsi.
