
Dr. Bettye Walker, co-founder of the A-AMAN Technology STEM Center recently celebrated Role Model Day at Holman United Methodist Church. Former A-MAN, Inc. achievers contributing to the program were Justin Walker, DeJuan Stevens, Benjamin Osborne, Marla Bleavins, Nile Stribling Sandra Gray, Ivy Hobson, Zaneta Smith, Kezia Osborne, Atta’ya Reed-Brown, Gyasi Jordan, Dr. Tatiana Rogers, Dr. Jill Ballesteros-Bowman, and Mrs. Gaila Williams, who is the parent component coordinator.
The attendees at this event witnessed A-MAN role models with their mentees. A role model offers tailored guidance and assistance to facilitate the growth and development of the students. A-MAN provides experiences that prepare students to attend higher academic institutions and fulfill the nation’s leadership and technological needs.
Ricardo LJ Mowatt, Holman/A-MAN STEM Center coordinator, spearheaded the program by welcoming the attendees and talking about the purpose of the event. During the program, role models shared their experiences with mentoring the next generation of Achievers.
Holman Senior Pastor Victor Cyrus-Franklin spoke to A-MAN students regarding the importance of the Center and passing the torch to the next generation. The A-MAN Achievers were also given the opportunity to introduce themselves and share their future goals.
The program ended with all in attendance standing and reciting the A-MAN Motto, led by Justin Walker, and followed by refreshment hour.
Dr. Bettye and Prof. Hildreth (Hal) Walker co-founded the African American Male Achievers Network and the Cape Town Space Society, a Chapter of the National Space Society, headquartered in Washington, D.C. A-MAN is dedicated to building the leaders and participants in science and technology for tomorrow. The A-MAN Center is an outgrowth of B-MAP, an educational research grant developed and directed by Dr. Bettye Walker and funded by UCLA. It was the first STEM program in the country.
