On the 55th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Simmons College of Kentucky announced a new $2 million initiative on racial justice. College President Kevin Cosby announced the gift from the Eula Mae and John Baugh Foundation during a service at St. Stephen Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. The centerpiece of the initiative will be creation of The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. Center for Racial Justice.

The morning’s testimony was largely disrupted by arguments outside the jury’s presence over Jackson’s appearance. The judge said he found one defense lawyer’s complaints last week about Black pastors to be “reprehensible,” and that no group would be excluded from his courtroom.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy Saturday for an African-American man shot to death by a police officer following a shooting at a crowded Alabama shopping mall. Jackson said the Hoover police officer who shot Emantic “EJ” Fitzgerald Bradford Jr., 21, “must face justice” and urged authorities to release tapes of the shooting. “No one is above the law,” Jackson said. The officer killed Bradford on Thanksgiving night while responding to a shooting at the Riverchase Galleria Mall. Authorities initially identified Bradford as the gunman, but later retracted that allegation and searched for the real
