The Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission invites you to join community public hearing to review 2021 Draft district maps
The Commission is very proud to send the map adopted at last night’s meeting to the City Council for its review. Our work has been informed by Census data, the federal Voting Rights Act, countless hours of public testimony, and core values and guiding principles that commissioners committed to at the start of our work.
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on Oct. 25 to elect Councilmember Curren Price for the position of Council President Pro Tempore. In light of the racist City Hall recording scandal, the LA City Council last week named Councilmember Paul Krekorian as its new Council President. On Friday, Oct. 21, Council President Krekorian introduced a motion to select Councilmember Price as the next President Pro Tempore of the LA City Council. Last week, a recording anonymously posted on the social media site Reddit rocked the Los Angeles City Council. On the recording, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Hererra, City Council President Nury Martinez (District 6), and City Council members Kevin de León (District 14) and Gilbert Cedillo (District 1) can be heard discussing redistricting using crass terms and divisive, racist language.

The Los Angeles City Council today advanced a draft map of proposed new borders for its 15 districts, ahead of the first of two state-required public hearings on the map tomorrow. Over the last week, council members made significant changes to a draft map originally recommended by a civilian redistricting commission. City Council President Nury Martinez had blasted that original map, saying the commission’s drastic changes to council districts “confused and alienated thousands.”

The Los Angeles City Council today will begin its portion of the redistricting process with a presentation from the City Council Redistricting Commission and a vote to create an Ad Hoc Redistricting Committee.
: Council Districts (CDs) 8, 9 and 10 saw minimal changes in the final draft map to be submitted to the Los Angeles City Council by the Redistricting Commission. The adopted draft map, which passed by a 15-6 vote, featured adjustments to the three CDs with the city’s highest numbers of voting age African Americans. Most notably, Exposition Park is now located in CD 8.
