Councilmembers Curren Price and Marqueece Harris-Dawson, the only African Americans on the L.A. City Council, supported the motion of Council President Nury Martinez to appoint Heather Hutt as the interim Councilmember representing the 10th District.
Both Price and Harris-Dawson, along with several other Councilmembers, delivered passionate remarks in highlighting Hutt’s capabilities to serve the people. Due to Hutt’s long public service career, many members were well acquainted with her skills and talents.
“Over the many years I have known Heather Hutt, she has been a fierce advocate, committed to empowerment, civic engagement and lending her voice to the voiceless. She stepped up for the people of District 10 as a non-voting caretaker during a time of great uncertainty to make sure constituents had someone they could lean-on, and while her appointment as LA City Councilwoman is temporary, she has already built a framework for greatness,” said Price, who represent CD 9.
“In her new role, she brings with her a wealth of experience, fortitude and a long standing track record of getting things done. Working alongside the likes of then-U.S. Senator, Vice-President Kamala Harris, serving as the first Black U.S. Senate State Director in the history of California, acting as treasurer of the California Democratic Party Black Caucus or leading the charge with the Clean-Air and VoteLA campaigns, she is an accomplished leader, and we are fortunate to have someone of her caliber to speak on behalf of the District 10 community.”
Harris-Dawson, who represents CD 8, also cited his long friendship with Hutt and awareness of her work on behalf of the community. In his comments, he emphasized, “I was proud to support Heather and her nomination as a full voting member for CD 10. I’m glad that we had an open process for everybody to comment.
“I want everyone in the community to put their arms around her and rally around Heather Hutt. I want her to be as strong as possible. ”
