Unhoused and single-parent veterans can enjoy a wide range of amenities at Casa de Rosas, a 36-unit development comprised of 15 studios, 19 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments.
During an open house held on April 7, scores of veterans toured the Casa de Rosas campus as well as submitted applications to determine their eligibility to become tenants in the housing community.
The development team was also on hand, which included representatives of Ward Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) and Integral Group LLC, along with other supporters of the initiative.
“We held this open house specificially for homeless veterans. Also, we were able to assist a few veterans who don’t qualify for veteran’s benefits, even though they were honorably discharged,” said Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, WEDC president.
“We are really trying to reach to single veterans, who have families, even if they are not currently living with their children,” she added. “We have an onsite/kindergarten operated by USC and people living in the community can apply to send their children, too, and it costs absolutely nothing.”
Some of the amenities at the site, which is located in L.A.’s University Park District, consist of on-site management, furnished units, a quiet room, a garden, courtyard, laundry room and controlled entry. Several supportive services are available as well.
“I want to give credit to our development partner, Integral, a Black-owned company that’s based in Atlanta and has expanded to the West Coast,” Dupont-Walker said.
WEDC has a long history of investing in the South L.A. community. Established in 1987 as one of the first faith-based EDCs in the city, it currently operates three housing complexes for low-income families and seniors in L.A. Integral, founded in 1998, is noted for creating sustainable master-planned, mixed-use, mixed-income communities.
