The ups-and-downs of finding true love are highlighted in the play, “Girl From Schenectady.” The one-woman show, performed by actress Odunayo Majekodunmi, follows the journey of Ayo, a 38-year-old Nigerian, in her search for true love, yet determined to lose her virginity before she turns 40.
Along the way, she discovers God’s love and self-love before attaining her original goal in the last place she expected to find it.
Majekodunmi, who plays 11 different characters in the play, was inspired to write and produce the play after facing disappointments on the dating scene. She also learned that many of her colleagues encountered similar problems.
“I had a lot of conversations with single Christian women who experienced similar situations and conflicts with finding true love, particularly those who were celibate or virgins and waiting until marriage to have sex,” she recalled.
“So, my main goal in producing this play is to inspire women and men, who have been hurt in previous relationships or marriages, not to give up on self-love, God’s love and finding true love.”
“Girl From Schenectady” received rave reviews during its earlier this year at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Based on the responses from both believers and non-believers, Majekodunmi trusts the people from all walks of life will be uplifted by the performance.
She added that her strong faith keeps her grounded as well as ignites her creativity. In fact, she is also working on another play that involves a Nigerian family’s cultural differences with African Americans.
“As a Nigerian American, I like to tell stories that have not been heard and write and produce topics that are not being discussed very often,” said Majekodunmi.
