$3.4 Million Grant to Aid Unemployed Californians in Reentering the Workforce

Monday, Congresswoman Laura Richardson announced that the Department of Labor (DOL) has given California a $3.4 million grant for assisting people who have lost their jobs in finding new employment.

“This grant will help thousands of Californians, including many here in the 37th District, who have lost their jobs in this recession to reenter the workforce,” Congresswoman Richardson said. “These funds will be used by career centers across the state to assess and help match people who have lost their jobs with appropriate new positions so they can feed their families and actively contribute to their communities. With unemployment numbers at more than 20 percent in some areas of the 37th District, this funding can’t come soon enough and I look forward to hearing the success stories it makes possible.”

The DOL grant continues the reemployment and eligibility initiatives for people who have lost their jobs. The funding will allow staff at one-stop career centers to conduct in-person assessments with individuals who are receiving unemployment benefits. These assessments are used to determine which services and training are appropriate for each worker. The workers will also develop an individual work-search plan and be provided with labor market information that will help them make a more focused job search.

Congresswoman Richardson is a Democrat from California’s 37th Congressional District. She is a member of the House Committees on Transportation & Infrastructure and Homeland Security and is chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Communications, Preparedness, and Response. Her district includes Long Beach, Compton, Carson, Watts, Willowbrook and Signal Hill.
