2014 Health Challenge: Diet and Health Part 5

There I was enjoying a party when a reader approached me to complain about the one week diet plan. The complaint was that she tried the plan and gained 3 pounds rather than losing weight. Well, I was befuddled.

I asked if she counted her calories. The answer was no. I then explained the simple laws of physics and calories. If you eat more calories than you burn, then you will gain weight. A liquid diet of ice cream has more calories than a solid diet of steak and potatoes. So, any focus on diet and nutrition must be related to some focus on total caloric intake.

If you are malnourished or underweight, then you may gain weight with the one week diet plan. Most of us will lose weight. The idea is to give yourself a gift of health and life. So, for one week follow these simple dietary suggestions.


·      No sweet drinks. Drink only water. No alcohol.

·      No bread or butter

·      No fried foods. No beef

·      Eat oatmeal for breakfast

·      Walk as much as possible

·      No dessert

Weigh Sunday and Friday morning. Send you weight measurements to me via email or by phone. If you have diabetes or hypertension, also send your blood pressure and blood sugar readings.

The point is to start new dietary rituals that when followed will lead to new dietary habits. New healthy dietary habits will improve your health and extend your life.
