The Rev. Al Sharpton announced on August 29 that he has selected Janaye Ingram as the national executive director of National Action Network, the civil rights organization that Sharpton founded.

Ingram will succeed Tamika D. Mallory, who is stepping down after serving the position for four years.

Sharpton said he was “deeply impressed” by Ingram, who headed the group’s D.C. bureau for the past two years and was instrumental in organizing Saturday’s commemorative March on Washington.

“She will immediately move forward with our plans to do deal with Voter ID in North Carolina, Texas and other states, and with gun violence in Chicago,” Sharpton said. “Attorney Michael A. Hardy and others within NAN’s senior leadership are determined to turn the momentum of Saturday’s march and the celebration of today into a concrete movement on the ground.”

Mallory, who was the youngest executive director in the network’s history, said will continue to work closely with Sharpton and the network on key national initiatives launched during her tenure, while continuing to focus more specifically on women’s rights, gun violence and new millennial activism.

“I have been blessed to work alongside a man I deeply respect and I credit much of my success as a public speaker and social change agent to the many years of tutelage, nurturing and guidance I received from Reverend Sharpton,” she said. “I will continue to apply my expertise as an advocate to build deeper partnerships within the private sector through strategic communication and diversity planning.”
