After 12 decades of ministry, the Second Baptist Church of Redlands shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, the membership, led by Pastor Anthony and Bishop Dr. Jackie L. Green, is planning a dual celebration of its 120th Anniversary and the Greens’ 25th year of pastoral service.
The celebration theme is ‘Called and Commissioned with Compassion and Courage to Confess their Faith in Christ as Salt and Light’ based on Matthew 5:13-16.
The occasion kicks-off Saturday, November l7 at 6 p.m., with an appreciation service for Pastor Green. Rejoicing continues on Sunday, November 18 at the 11 a.m. worship as Associate Pastor Glen Robertson delivers the message.
The observance concludes at 4 p.m. with guest preacher, Pastor Larry Thomas of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Ontario. Several area churches and choirs will participate as well.
Anniversary Chairs Melissa Richey and Deacon Wendell Green said the celebration includes a l20th Historical Souvenir Book compiled by Bishop Green, recognition of the five oldest members, and ‘Salt and Light’ Awards presented to three former members.
Second Baptist was the first African American church in the city of Redlands. Over the years, 30 pastors have led the congregation. In l983, the Greens began their ministry at the church, ushering in a new era of outreach to fellow churches, educational institutions and local government agencies.
Also, Pastor Green produces several original Christian plays and collaborates with the Redlands Police Department in Midnight Basketball for troubled youth.
