The Minority Apartment Owners Association held its second meeting of the year on Thursday, March 13, with Director of Los Angeles Housing Authority for the City of Los Angeles, Section 8 program, highlighting April as Fair Housing month. Ruth A. Hayles, executive director of the MAOA and general manager of International Realty & Investments, welcomed the standing room crowd at the meeting. She emphasized how important it is for rental property owners to understand fair housing laws especially as it relates to “Fair Housing for Disabled Persons”.
During the meeting, Lynn stated that his funding had been restored and that the department can start issuing new vouchers. Currently, he said, he only has 25 inspectors for the entire city, which really puts pressure on the Inspection Department.
Members expressed much appreciation for the forward thinking and implementation of many programs to help not only landlords but those on the program. Those included putting more resources into the department that looks at rent increases and working with HUD on a program that could implement a 2 year inspection program based on risk assessment. Lynn also provided the new rental maximum rental rates that start at $1,156.00 for a one bedroom and goes up to $3,011.00 for six bedrooms.
