Metropolitan Optical Serving Crenshaw Community since 1999

From a certain distance, the giant, dilapidated sign that says “Crenshaw Square” suggests empty storefronts and something like entrepreneurial obscurity in the area between 39th Street and Coliseum. Look closely though, and you will find viable merchants offering viable goods and services. One, Metropolitan Optical is owned and operated by certified optician Jose Diaz.

For thirteen years he has been serving the Crenshaw community (before that he was near LaCienega and San Vicente). He will “do any type of glasses and any type of prescription,” he said. As if to prove his point, a back wall peppered with VIP clientele looms behind him.

Over the years, he has served celebs like Smokey Robinson, Jaleel White and Tina Turner. Pricing depends on variables like prescription and style, said Diaz, but he encourages those needing eyewear to come and look at his large collection. For more information, contact Diaz— located at 3848 Crenshaw— at 323-299-6018.
