LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS COMMIT TO RAISING FUNDS FOR ELEVEN NONPROFITS

Answering President Obama’s call for community service, Arts and Minds, Inc., an Inglewood-based youth focused nonprofit and Inglewood City Councilman Daniel K. Tabor launched the “We Are the Change” Community Service Campaign recently at Inglewood City Hall with the assistance of City of Hope Development Director Nancy Lewis (pictured).

The campaign’s goal is to connect students from Animo Inglewood Charter, California Academy for Math and Science, City Honors, Inglewood, and Morningside high schools, in addition to St. Mary’s Academy, to eleven charities.

The students will earn required community service hours by planning and implementing fundraising campaigns over a twelve week period from March through May. More than 30 high schools students turned out to the Saturday morning event to pledge their commitment.

Audrey Thompson, Arts and Minds Executive Director said, “We want our students to know that they have the power to change the world!” The eleven charities selected for support include Africare, Arts and Minds Inc., Beyond Shelter, City of Hope, Downtown Women’s Center, Great Beginnings for Black Babies, Jenesse Center, Mini Twelve Step House, My Friend’s Place, Prototypes and Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California presented information about their agencies for the students at the event.

If you are a high school student and want to be a part of the We Are the Change Community Service Campaign, contact Audrey Thompson at 310-644-0696.
