Kaiser Opens New Hospital in Downey
Kaiser Permanente opened a 352-bed hospital in Downey to replace its Bellflower Medical Center, the hospital chain announced today.
The full service, $390 million hospital at Imperial Highway and Bellflower Boulevard is near Kaiser Permanente’s outpatient Garden and Orchard Medical Office Buildings.
The six-story hospital is meant to help replace Kaiser Permanente’s Bellflower Medical Center, which opened in 1965.
Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center is equipped with a full-service emergency department and a 24-hour pharmacy; it has 18 private birthing and recovery suites and is capable of handling more than 3,400 annual births.
Downey Regional Medical Center, meanwhile, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, saying it would use the process to get out of money- losing HMO contracts.
The private, not-for-profit 199-bed hospital said it expected to emerge from bankruptcy within a year.
