Shawn Chrystopher proves to be more than just another rapper, but an artist who is educated about the music game, its fame, fortune and Hip Hop’s Heavyweights’.
With his long overdue album “The Lovestory LP” dropping this summer, Chrystopher definitely believes dreams do come true. The Inglewood native is quickly making a name for himself in the rap industry with music videos garnering over 1 million views on his personal YouTube Channel. He is now ready to step into his own with the help of super producer Timbaland and record executive Kevin Liles.
His album titled “The Lovestory LP” has a romantic feel, however Chrystopher explains that there was a process behind the title, stating, “I listened to all the records I was doing, finding one cohesive title. I didn’t want it to be anything crazy or self-titled. All of my records are about my passion for my family, homies and relationships. It’s a common subject that I have around me so
When asked if he consider himself a storyteller he said, “Yes definitely, I am a storyteller. My dad was a really big storyteller; he would have these amazing stories. I never realized that was what I could do and felt like if I kept talking about my life I’ll never run out of material. The song “One of My Homies” is actually the only song where I don’t use ‘I’ a lot. It’s not really about me, but the best way to find out who I am is to know the people around me. It really connects with people because it’s real.”
“One of My Homies” off the LP shows Chrystopher in his element, a west coast rapper representing his neighborhood. He is excited to bring back the style and individuality of west coast rap stating “It’s really dope, because we’re able to really be ourselves with the way the music game is. We’re able to upload our music and videos ourselves for the fans to hear. Honestly, within a 5 mile radius you have me, Odd Future’s Tyler The Creator, Dom Kennedy and Kendrick Lamar. None of us sound the same but where all from the same area and I think it’s just a test to being able to be individuals and not having to necessarily conform to what the higher power feels what is hot.”
Being from Inglewood has a lot of influence on Chrystopher’s music. “I sometimes I go back to different records and rewrite things because I want it to be more personal,” he said. “I kind of have to battle with myself a little bit just to let it all out because you’re not the only person going through what you’re going through.”
Shawn teamed up with Timbaland who is the executive producer on his debuted album. Timbaland has followed Chrystopher’s music, mentoring him and urging him to fine-tune his unique sound. [Laughs] “People always make it a big deal, like yo’ you working with Timbaland. When I started rapping, I wasn’t trying to rap for the homies but rap for the world wide stage and to do that you have to be recognized by the greatest.”
Shawn was impressed that Timberland noticed his work. “It was an honor to have Timbaland call my phone and say he really likes what I got going on. He didn’t want to take my vocals and put it on his beats per say, but told me you have your sound let me help you tune that up. Being able to work with Timbaland is a dream come true.”
