One group of people that tends to be overlooked in our society have the most to do with it—our elders. But, that isn’t the case at the 54th Street Seventh-day Adventist Church (54thSDAC).
54thSDAC recently honored their seniors for their work and dedication in the church and throughout the community.
A representative from L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s office presented all of the seniors with certificates for their efforts and time. L.A. City Councilman Bernard Parks and his wife, Bobbie Parks, also stopped by to offer their congratulations and support of the seniors at 54thSDAC.
“It is important that we honor and remember [seniors] contributions,” said Parks. “So often, people forget the impact that [these] people make in our community.”
Margaret Carson is the Community Service Director and Senior Coordinator for 54thSDAC. This was the church’s first senior recognition event and she felt that they deserved their due.
“The seniors here are my passion for the work that they do for the community, for one another, and the programs that they have instituted,” said Carson.
“They bring me information as to those that may need food, transportation to church, if [people] are sick. They have formed a prayer band that meets each Sabbath morning at 8 a.m., they’re in the chapel praying—people’s lives have been changed.”
Pastor Adolphus Garnett is the pastor of 54thSDAC and happy to see the seniors get their recognition.
“It was a fantastic day of celebrating our seniors,” said Pastor Garnett. “They paved the way for us to be able to experience the freedoms that we have, the joy of serving God in a Christian way and they’ve set examples for us time-after-time.
“I just applaud them, I praise them and I thank God for each one of them.”
