In honor of World Teacher’s Day on October 5, Junior Achievement of Southern California (JASoCal) awarded their first ever “School Makes Cents” Award to Maynard Brown of Southern California’s Crenshaw High School. The award recognizes Brown’s success in implementing the Junior Achievements Graduation Pathways Program, which aims to engage underserved kids throughout their educational career and keep them in school. Congresswoman Maxine Waters representing California’s 35th district, attended the event.

Former NBA player Marques Johnson and Junior Achievement of Southern California representative Gregory Franks was also in attendance.

Waters spoke highly of the educator and presented him with her own special recognition award for his involvement in the Crenshaw High School community.

“The School Makes Cents award also shows appreciation for the over 4,000 teachers championing JASoCal programs throughout Southern California’s schools,” said a Crenshaw High spokesperson.

Maynard Brown graduated from Crenshaw High School in 1972 and went on to Cornell University to earn an MBA.  While he was skilled in basketball and played two seasons professionally, his focus was always education.   He went on to found Metropolitan Distribution Company (a wholesale dairy distributor) and became a Junior Achievement Volunteer.  He was extremely bothered that the only “business” course taught at Crenshaw High School was typing and it was at that time that he decided to sell his business and become a full time teacher at Crenshaw High School.
