The California African American Museum (CAAM) was pleased to host An Evening With Issa Rae, where more than 300 aspiring actors, actresses, filmmakers and students packed CAAM’s sculpture court for a glimpse into the rationale and creativity behind the comedic web series the Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl.  Issa Rae is the writer, producer and star of the popular web series, which has received rave reviews from critics and financial support from fans. Issa Rae screened two episodes of The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl and answered questions from the audience.  Rae revealed her inspiration came from moving from a suburban neighborhood on the east coast to the fast, hip life of Los Angeles.

The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl includes a 12-member cast and is a comedic take on the life of an African American girl named “J” (played by Issa Rae) chronicling awkward encounters of everyday life. The first season explores J’s love life obsessions between two potential love interests - the character “Fred,” a co-worker who plays hard to get and J’s Caucasian friend “White Jay”.  The monthly web series offers a platform for Rae to address issues she can relate to while still satisfying a love for offbeat humor.  For more information on Issa Rae or to view her webisodes visit
