Crowd participating in Back-to-school

Only three days remain until the 14th Annual Mother’s In Action Back to School Health and Family Festival, at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Los Angeles Unified School District started school early this year, but MIA is still expecting a large turnout of students needing backpacks, paper, pencils, binders, uniforms and more. Like the 13 festivals before it, the “more” will include medical services like immunizations, vision hearing tests and dental.

MIA provides these services, they said, so that students can set the tone for a successful school year.

“If kids can’t see, they fail,” said MIA President Brenda Marsh Mitchell.

“If they can’t hear, they fail. If their mouth hurts, they fail. If parents get them to school late everyday, they fail,” (which is why they will also be offering parenting classes this year.)

Medical groups such as the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Hubert H. Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center (HHCHC), Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) and Explorer One Ambulance and Medical Services (EOAMS) will be at the BSHFF providing health services and information to youth and family.

Festival sponsors include: The Bakewell Family Foundation, the Brotherhood Crusade, Radio Free KJLH, 7-Eleven, Walmart SEIU-ULTCW, Gas Company, Metro PCS, Councilwoman Jan Perry, The Gas Company, One United Bank, The Johnny Cochran Firm, Seven- Eleven, Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc., Office Depot, SEIU ULTCW, Councilman Herb Wesson and County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas.

Mothers in Action is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization founded by the late Johnnie Tillman, Lillian Mobley, Nola Carter, Gwen Green, Mary Henry, Danny J. Bakewell Sr. and Brenda Marsh-Mitchell. MIA is a result of the 1992 civil unrest and aims to bring the community together. Made up of mothers, they aim to help the youth, elderly and less fortunate residents of the community.
