Council President Herb Wesson and Officer Brigette Peterson celebrate new Benny Potter Park improvements in the West Adams community.

Considering the rising rates of obesity and diabetes in the community, it is good to see community residents exercising and eagerly utilizing the new recreation and fitness assets at the Benny H. Potter West Adams Avenues Memorial Park and Annex in the West Adams community.

These improvements reflected the efforts of City Council President Herb Wesson who was joined recently by residents and city officials in celebrating the new park improvements.

The improvements include new walkways, a new universally accessible fitness equipment, new picnic tables and a metal picnic shelter, barbeques, drinking fountains, solar-powered security lighting, concrete paving, and decomposed granite paving.  New trees and landscaping have been planted, and there is a new state-of-the-art smart irrigation system for the park.

The design encourages and stimulates interactive play for children of all abilities as well as provides a safe environment for families to enjoy.

“Revitalizing this park has been an important priority,” said Wesson, who has provided leadership in creating park improvements throughout the 10th Council District.  “We want our residents to live healthy lives, and in order to do so they need a quality environment in which to do so.  We also know that revitalizing this park is one of the ways we can revitalize the West Adams community.”

Joining Wesson at the celebration were City Engineer Gary Lee Moore, Ramon Barajas, Department of Recreation and Parks, Donna Jones, West Adams Avenues Block Club, Stevie Stearns, United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council, and Melissa Zak, Southwest LAPD.

The $580,000 project was funded by California Propositions 12 and 40 and the Capital Improvement Expenditure Program.  The new additions were designed by the City’s Bureau of Engineering and Shane’s Inspiration, the general contractor for the project was Horizon Construction.
