The Frederick Douglass Charter High School (FDCHS) cheerleaders attended the USA Summer Cheer Camp on June 20th to June 22nd. The USA Summer Cheer camp was located outside the Knott’s Berry Farm amusement park in Buena Park, CA.
Cheerleaders from all around came out for the camp, which started at 8 A.M and ended at 9 P.M. In their spare time, the cheerleaders and cheer coaches got to stay at the Beautiful Knott’s Hotel and explore the amusement park.
At camp, the girls were taught by the USA cheer team, multiple things on how to be excellent cheerleaders, be united as a team, and new dances and cheers.
Some who attended the camp said, “Camp was a fun experience, but also very challenging.” But still, the FDCHS cheer squad had their mindset right and took the challenge head on.
At the cheer camp, the FDCHS cheer squad received, superior ranking for their home cheer evaluation, excellent ranking for the camp cheer evaluation, and excellent ranking for the sideline evaluation. Also, the Frederick Douglass cheer coach, Steven Nielsen, received the Superior Coaching Award.
Two of the girls from the FDCHS cheer squad, Skye Jasper and Morgan Cole, received a Top 10 All American Award and have been invited to perform in New York in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and also in London and England.
Skye Jasper, who is the Frederick Douglass Cheer captain, was also offered to join the USA teaching staff for being an excellent cheerleader and doing an outstanding job at cheer camp.
All the girls were invited and will be participating in the UCLA football game on September 15th, 2012 at the Rose Bowl. The FDCHS achieved their goal and won 2 spirit sticks and also walked away from camp with the highest award received, which was the Unity Award Title, and were given 3 Gatorade coolers, Gatorade mixes for the drinks, cups, towels, mixing spoons, containers, and a certificate.
Coach Nielsen of the FDCHS cheer squad says, “I couldn’t be more proud of these girls and I also have to give myself a pat on the back for achieving more than I set out to. This year, the Frederick Douglass cheerleaders are going to be like you’ve never seen.”
This season, for the first time, the FDCHS cheer squad plans on competing and have their goals set to making it to Nationals.
Come out and support the Frederick Douglass cheer squad and football team at their home games at Rancho Cienega park, (Jackie Robinson Stadium), at 7 P.M on September 20th, September 27th, and October 11th.
