Pastor Sonja Dawson

The excitement is stirring at New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church as the congregation prepares to celebrate the life and legacy of its organizing pastor, the late Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson, during Founder’s Day on Sunday, August 19, at 3:30 p.m.

The theme for this historic and momentous occasion is ‘A Salute to Servant Leadership’ based on Hebrews 13:7.  The guests will be Pastor George Thomas and the members of Holy Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Compton.

“Truly, we give God all honor, glory, and praise for the 48 years that Pastor Dawson labored in the vineyard to reach souls for Jesus Christ in this present-age. As one of God’s chosen vessels, Rev. Dr. Dawson challenged and changed the landscape of urban ministry in Los Angeles with his passion for community and social development and his commitment to unifying the Body of Christ,” said Pastor Sonja Dawson.

As a visionary, Dr. Dawson followed the moving of the Holy Spirit and planted a church where people from all races and socioeconomic backgrounds could gather together to be nurtured for witnessing and winning the lost.  As an educator, he developed one of the largest Sunday school departments in Los Angeles, authored several books on Sunday School growth, and founded the Church Leadership Training Institute (C.L.T.I.) of the LAX Urban Center (formerly known as Crescent Bay West Los Angeles Association).

As a leader, he served on numerous religious, civic, and community boards and as a global ambassador, Pastor Dawson traveled extensively on missionary journeys both domestically and internationally.

“But more importantly, as a family man, Pastor Dawson cherished his union with his wife, Lady Emeritus Mamie P. Dawson; his children, Rev. Sonja R. Dawson, Esq., and Sis. Sherri Dawson-Williams; his grandchildren, Rev. Lonnell Williams (Jessica) and Sis. Lonnae Williams, and the New Mount Calvary Church family,” added a spokesperson.

“To accommodate this special occasion, we will have Sunday school at 8:30 a.m., a joint Worship service at 10 a.m., a Wreath Laying Ceremony at Rose Hills Cemetery at 1:30 p.m., and our Grand Celebration at 3:30 p.m.,” said Pastor Sonja Dawson.

“So, as we prepare for this day, we solicit your prayers and request the participation of our brothers and sisters in Christ, our church families, and the community at-large."
