The event, which featured a live performance by award-winning R&B recording artist Maxwell and a live auction of some wonderful prize packages including a Smart Car, a trip for two to attend a taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago, Michael Jordan flight School package with a 4-night day at Bacarra Spa, A MotoPure H12 diamond encrusted Bluethooth headset and all of the sudden courtside seats to a Laker game. During the auction, Magic Johnson wanted to get in on the action and he jumped on stage unannounced to offer up his coveted Laker seats. Magic’s impromptu offer also included signed jersey and dinner with the basketball star. Magic got such a big response, he offered his deal to the three highest bidders.
After quite a bit of laughter, Baseball great Barry Bonds created an auction item of his own offering $5,000 to play Magic Johnson one-on-one on his basketball court.
All the fun and laughter was for a good cause. The event raised more than $142,500 for the HollyRod Foundation and event producers were still counting as of press time.
The HollyRod Foundation also honored Cedric the Entertainer with the 2008 HollyRod Humanitarian Award; businessman James Warsaw with the Matthew T. Robinson Award of Courage and philanthropist Lisette Ackerberg with the Angel on the Path Award. The first annual Champion Award will be presented by hollyrod4kids to Jason “JMac” Mc Elwain - the teen basketball player with autism.
