Mel’s Fish Market, the fabled “You Buy, We Fry” fried fish emporium that has been a staple of the Crenshaw district for more than two decades now, is making a change. Started by entrepreneur and neighborhood “father figure,” George Powell, the business has catered to the discriminating Southland palate with a wide variety of fish offerings ranging from whiting, to red snapper, to colossal tiger shrimp and everything in between.

You may remember seeing their familiar Mel’s Fish sign at their former Crenshaw Boulevard location or at their current location at S.E. corner of Jefferson Ave. and Buckingham Road, between La Brea and Crenshaw boulevards. Patrons can now get ready for a whole new and improved Mel’s Fish Market and a brand new logo. (Show before and after images with captions)

“We listened carefully to our customers and we wanted to respond in the biggest way possible,” remarked Georgette Powell, Mel’s Fish Market’s Owner and daughter of the restaurant’s founder. In response to changing tastes and the public’s movement toward lower salt, more health conscious diets, Ms. Powell stated emphatically “ we love our customers and we want them to enjoy the very best, so it didn’t make sense for us to change our menu without upgrading and modernizing our facility, giving our customers the best imaginable dining experience along with the best tasting, healthiest food possible.”

Mel’s Fish Market is remodeling and during their renovation which begins on Thursday, October 25, they will be offering their same world class food products from a mobile frying/broiling truck set up in the parking lot of their familiar Jefferson and Buckingham location.
