Having a weekly column sometimes is wonderful and other times it can wear you out. Every week I am amazed at how fast next week rolls around and another column is due. The consistency of needing to write my column is definitely my biggest challenge. However, having the opportunity to convey what I am feeling to you our readers is also the best part of having a weekly column. The other thing that I love is that I get to write just about whatever I want. I try to convey to you what challenges I am having here at the paper from time to time, I also try to convey and promote important issues that are happening in our community that are relevant to African Americans in L.A. or anywhere in America. Lastly, I get to convey just what’s on my mind. Sometimes it is things that are very serious, other times it is things that are just on my mind. This week is one of those weeks, I’m just telling people what’s on my mind, you may not find it important (it probably isn’t) but it is on my mind.
For those of you who don’t know I am a HUGE sports fan. I watch games just about every week, I am a USC Football season ticket holder (Fight On!) and I look forward to watching just about any football, basketball, track, boxing etc. event that comes along. In fact my son’s and my goal is to attend every major sporting event there is including a major NASCAR race.
So, with that said, every week I ask myself “how come nobody is talking about firing Notre Dame Head Coach Charlie Weiss”? Now to many of you, you are probably wondering how is that relevant to anything about African Americans; but honestly I think it is.
Lets think about it. Notre Dame had a head coach 4 years ago who was African American; his name was Tyrone Willingham (now the head coach at the University of Washington). He was fired although he had a winning record, all because he was not winning enough and not beating USC. Now lets fast forward to now. Plain and simple Notre Dame sucks! They can’t win to save their lives (sorry Coach Dorrell). This is the worst season in Notre Dame history, but no one is complaining about the coach.
The truth is the first 2 years the players Coach Weiss was winning with were Coach Willingham’s; the players now are actually Coach Weiss’s (including his star QB, Casey Clausen). Coach Weiss’s recruits are horrible; they are slow, unmotivated, and just downright bad. But no one is calling for his head and this frustrates me. It frustrates me because every week I watch sports ESPN, NBC, Fox Sports West etc. and I keep looking for someone to say the obvious, say the things that they said about the Black coach when he was losing, but they refuse to say it about the White coach and keep making excuses for him.
Well, that is the problem in our society and since the White press will not state it, once again it is up to the Black press to state it. Tyrone Willingham was treated unfairly, Charlie Weiss is getting a pass and that is the problem with not only coaching, but also society in general, people just don’t see things the same when it’s Black and White!
I need to hear from you now more than ever. I need top know what is going on in our community. I also need to know what other stories we need to tell, and what’s on your mind. I really do want to hear from you, I want you to “Talk to Danny.”
Sincerely, Danny J. Bakewell, Jr. President & Executive Editor
