D.L. Hughley’s 5 reasons to watch the BET Awards and more

By Stephanie Frederic,
Sentinel Entertainment Editor

The BET Awards will be a homecoming of sorts for comedian D.L. Hughley who got his start hosting the network’s hit show, “Comic View.”

On Tuesday, June 24 at 8pm, D.L. is hosting the hottest ticket on television - otherwise known as the BET Awards 08 .

With a stellar A-list roster of talent including Chris Brown, Nelly, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, Al Green and Quincy Jones set to appear and with the show only days away, we managed to grab a few moments with the funnyman to ask him about his role as the ringleader of Black Entertainment’s big night on TV.

Sentinel:   This must feel like a homecoming of sorts hosting the BET Awards since you started out hosting a show on BET?

D.L. – “It will feel like home.  I’ve been working with BET since they gave me my first job hosting “Comic View” so yeah, absolutely, they are like family to me. Everybody knows how good it feels to go home.”

Sentinel:   You have big shoes to fill as host of the highest rated awards show among African Americans. Can you talk about following in the footsteps of Will & Jada, Mo’Nique, Cedric the Entertainer & Steve Harvey?

Sentinel: Give us 5 reasons to watch BET Awards 08 this year?

D.L. – “I’ll give you four:

1) Because you want to laugh..
2) Because you want to go to a party with people you know, and listen to some great music
3) Because you’re too damn lazy to change the channel after watching “106 & Park”

4) Because gas is so expensive, don’t you really think its smarter to sit you’re a-- home!?”

We’ll add No. 5

5) Because D.L. Hughley is hosting.

You can watch the BET Awards 08 Tuesday, June 24 at 8pm. The show is live from the Shrine Auditorium at 5pm (8pm Eastern). The telecast is tape delayed for West Coast viewers.

D.L. – “I just do what it is I do and always plan to knock it out of the park.  Will & Jada, Mo’Nique, Damon, Ced, Steve…all great hosts ; all different. That’s the really amazing thing, we can all bring something different to the table.”

Sentinel:  What will you bring to the show - that viewers haven't seen before and what can people expect?

D.L. - “I’m not reinventing the wheel, but I’m putting the D.L. flavor on it.  You can expect the funny, cause I’m definitely going to bring that!  You can bet on a lot of laughs, exceptional musical performances, more laughs.  I just want people to laugh until they hurt themselves.”

Sentinel: How are you preparing and who are you excited to see?

D.L. “I’m doing a lot of writing, watching the news, coming up with ideas.  It’s a great time in our country right now.  There’s a lot of material for me to work with, I just have to turn on the news or pick up a newspaper and the jokes practically jump in my lap.”
