Documentary Project About Girls in Gangs is Personal

Well-known photographer Valerie Goodloe, who is the West Coast Staff Photojournalist for Johnson Publishing Company, Ebony/Jet Magazine, will be picking up a different type of camera for a good cause.

Goodloe, who is a South Los Angeles native, is the co-executive producer of a documentary titled Gang Girl: A Mother’s Journey to Save Her Daughter. Bill Duke and award-winning journalist Miki Turner are also executive producers.

The documentary will examine young girl’s involvement in gangs, which Goodloe says is overlooked.

“With all the attention on boys, girls are kind of unnoticed,” Goodloe said. “By the time a girl gets into trouble she may have been in trouble for a long time. With boys it is noticed much faster.”

The documentary revolves around Goodloe’s daughter, who became a member of a gang. Goodloe is using her own situation to increase awareness about the many girls who are getting involved in gangs.

Goodloe said that her daughter is doing much better now, and will enroll in a junior college. Goodloe also has a son who is entering his sophomore year at UCLA.

The documentary is still searching for funding. Women in Need of Discovering Own Worth (WINDOW), is helping Goodloe obtain the funds needed to produce the film. WINDOW seeks to aid and enrich the lives of women and girls in various communities by providing information through multi-media, endorsements, and fund raising.
