Isaac HayesCommunity Mourns loss of Issac Hayes

Still mourning the loss of legendary comedian and actor Bernie Mac, our community suffered another blow when news came that singer, songwriter, and funk-legend Isaac Hayes was found dead at his Tennessee home by family members on Sunday, August 10th.

Hayes, 65, was found unconscious next to his treadmill and was said to have been working on his first studio album since 1995’s Branded. He sprung to fame and critical acclaim on the southern soul music label, Stax Records in the 1960s. Hayes co-wrote such hits as “Soul Man”, Sam and Dave’s  “Hold on, I’m Comin’”, and “When Something’s Wrong with my Baby” with David Porter. His sophomore album “Hot Buttered Soul” became a milestone in the soul music movement and boosted Hayes to infamy with his distinct deep bass vocals, heavy guitars and horns, and his unique image, shaved head, gold jewelry and of course the sun glasses.

Hayes is most famously known for his composition of the 1971 film Shaft. The title theme spent two weeks at the top on the Billboard 100 and won Hayes a Golden Globe, Grammy, and an Academy Award, making him the first musician to receive an Oscar.

Along with his award-wining musical career, Hayes also became an accomplished actor in films and TV-shows such as The Rockford Files, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka, the controversial South Park, The Hughleys,  Dr. Doolittle 2, and Hustle & Flow.  He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and enjoyed the release of a documentary highlighting his career and impact on Memphis artists.

Hayes is survived by his wife, Adjowa, twelve children, fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of fans that will continue to carry his musical legacy to future generations.

Hayes would have been 66 on August 20th.
