On March 11, 2012, the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (NAASC-LA) held the 18th Annual Sister’s Awards Rhapsody in Art Jazz Brunch at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel located in downtown Los Angeles. At the Brunch, Beverly White, highly acclaimed veteran KNBC News Reporter and well-respected and renowned Speech Pathologist, Pamela Wiley, Ph.D. received the organizations 2012 Community Honoree awards. Dorothy LeBlanc, class of 1953, also received the 2012 Alumna Honoree award.
“It is a great honor that for nearly 18 years our Chapter, alumnae throughout Southern California and friends of the organization have been able to provide young women with well-deserved and needed scholarships,” said Jocelyn Hicks-Garner, Ph.D., NAASC-LA Chapter President. “Scholarships traditionally made available to Spelman College students through generous corporate donations are significantly reduced given the recent economic climate. It is even more important than ever, that NAASC-LA raises as much money as possible at this Brunch to help ensure that young women can continue to pursue a college education despite the economic recession."
The Rhapsody in Art Jazz Brunch has honored Spelman College Alumnae and notable African American women including Janet Jackson, Bebe Moore Campbell, Marian Wright Edelman and Jeri DeVard since its inception. The event began with a silent auction and vendor hour followed by brunch and a lively program, featuring live jazz performed by accomplished vocalist, poet and actress Gina Loring and her band. Gina has been featured on two seasons of HBO’s Def Poetry as well as BET’s Lyric Café and TVOne’s newest hit show, Verses and Flow.
KNBC News Reporter upon receiving the honor had this to say about being honored by the Spelman Alumnae Association “I am humbled and proud to have been considered for a Sister Award Presented by the LA Chapter of the National Association of Spelman College” “As a granddaughter of a domestic and a daughter of a school cafeteria lady, I say Thank you, you honor them when you honor me”.
