Long time Clippers General Manager Elgin Baylor is out, and Head Coach Mike Dunleavy is the new GM.

It appears that Baylor retired, but this does not seem to be a happy retirement for one of the 50 greatest players of all time, who had been the team’s GM since 1986.

“There is a dispute, and on the advice of my attorney they did not want me to discuss it,” Baylor said.  “That’s all I can say.”

Baylor was not present when training camp opened and he was not listed in the team’s preseason media guide.

With Baylor out it will finally be known who the problem was with the Clippers, was it Baylor, or owner Donald Sterling?

Sterling acquired the Clippers in 1981.  The pair has been together for the past 22 seasons, but has only been to the post season four times.  They have only won one playoff series, while finishing below .500 19 times.

Both men have taken the blame, but many fans have made the case that Baylor never had much to work with because Sterling would not invest in the team.  Even if that were the case it does not excuse Baylor’s poor drafting.  The Clippers have had high draft picks many seasons, most of which did not pan out.

The signing of Baron Davis looked like it would put the Clippers back in contention, but forward Elton Brand and guard Cory Maggette both left the team after Davis signed.  A line up of Davis, Brand, and Maggette would have put the Clippers in the running for a good playoff spot, but instead they look like they will be a one-man team.
